Food Stamps
Food Stamps is a federally funded program administered by local Social Services
for the United State Department of Agriculture. Eligibility is based on income and
resource standards for family size and life situation and there are work requirements
for some people. Owning a home is not an issue and there are no liens put on residential
property. For income standards click here.
The benefit is issued on a monthly basis and is designed to supplement the household's food
needs. Food Stamps are not allowed to be used for the purchase of tobacco, alcohol, paper
products, pet food, or medications.
The benefit is accessed by an Electronic Benefits Card and a personal (PIN) identification
number at an approved retail site and functions as a debit card.
Applications may be made by mail or in person but do require a pre-screening, interview, and
documentation. Expedited Food Stamp benefits may be issued within 5 working days
if you are eligible.
