How many teens in Schuyler County use alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs?


Alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana are the most commonly used drugs by Schuyler County youth. 


Alcohol

  • Alcohol is, by far, the most commonly used drug by adolescents in Schuyler County.
  • Nearly half (47.6%) of seventh through twelfth grade students have used alcohol at some point in their life.
  • Current alcohol use is also high among county teens, with 25.5% of students reporting alcohol use in the 30 days before the survey.
  • On average, teens in Schuyler County first use alcohol at the age of 12.9 years.
  • Teen alcohol use in Schuyler County is more common than use nationally.

Tobacco

  • Tobacco is used commonly by students
  • Approximately one in five (21.2%) seventh through twelfth grade students have used smokeless tobacco and nearly one in four (23.3%) have used cigarettes.
  • Less than half of those who have tried tobacco products are currently using them with fewer than one in ten students using cigarettes (8.5%) or smokeless tobacco (9.1%) in the 30 days before the survey.
  • On average, teens in Schuyler County first use cigarettes at the age of 12.7 years.
  • Teen cigarette and smokeless tobacco use in Schuyler County is more common than use nationally.

Other Drugs

  • Many students are using marijuana.
    • Lifetime marijuana use by students is overall similar to cigarette and smokeless tobacco use with approximately one fifth of students using. More than one in ten (11.2%) students report current use of marijuana.
  • Fewer students misuse prescription drugs than alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana in Schuyler County.
    • Approximately one in ten (10.6%) students has misused prescription drugs with 4.1% of students reporting current prescription drug misuse.
    • Prescription pain reliever misuse is more common than misuse of prescription tranquilizers and stimulants. While 3.5% and 4.1% of students report misuse of prescription tranquilizers and stimulants, respectively, 7.6% report misuse of prescription pain relievers.
