12 Months. 177 Pounds.

Did you know there is a program available to Schuyler County residents that can help them lose weight and keep it off? The program, offered by Schuyler County Public Health and their community partners, helps community members lose weight and improve their health. The most recent group of graduates from the program lost a total of 177 pounds.

“I am so much more active than I was a year ago, and I am so much better now and I don’t want to stop,” said one participant of the program. “This has been a motivator.”

The program, called the National Diabetes Prevention Program, helped participants lose weight and delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes. This program, which is endorsed by the CDC, is an evidence-based program which means research shows that it works.

During the yearlong program, participants attended class weekly for the first six months then met once a month for the second six months of the program. The program focused on helping participants:

• Eat healthy without giving up the foods they love

• Fit in physical activity even if they are busy

• Deal with stress and cope with challenges that can derail their hard work

• Get back on track if they get derailed

“You don’t know how much a 20 or 15-minute walk makes a difference,” one participant said. “And once I learned about controlling the amount of fat that I ate. It all worked together.”

If you want to sign up for the program, talk to your doctor or call Schuyler County Public Health at 607-535-8140.
